Absolute gravimetry

Absolute gravimetry is organized as a sub-group of its Working Group 1 “WG1—Geodetic observation-level modelling and systematic biases”. The WG1 chair is Johannes Boehm and the AG subgroup is headed by Jaakko Mäkinen. The following applications of repeated AG data in the Action are foreseen.
• Use repeated AG data within the WG1 on station-by-station basis as a consistency check for vertical rates from geometric techniques
• Use repeated AG data in the work of WG2 (Velocity determination/reference frame realization), as an independent information on vertical velocities relative to the Earth's center of mass
• Use repeated AG data as a geodetic dataset in WG4 (GIA model optimisation and ice mass balance computations).

Primary tasks for the subgroup are

• Data collection: support the International Gravity Field Service (IGFS) Working Group on AG and the International Gravity Bureau / Federal Agency of Geodey and Cartography database http://bgi.dtp.obs-mip.fr , http://agrav.bkg.bund.de
• Processing standards: support the work of the IGFS Working Group on AG, check collected data on key items
• Estimate instrument offsets: find offsets from international AG comparisons (CCM-WGG comparisons at BIPM, ECGS comparisons in Luxembourg, institute-level comparisons, etc.) and from field data. Incorporate remainder in uncertainty estimation together with WG3 (Noise characteristics of station coordinate time series/velocities)
• Estimate local gravity effects, above all hydrology. Incorporate remainder in uncertainty estimation with WG3
